Then in the 1960's the Escalante family moved to America for a better life. Escalante was hired as a basic mathematics teacher at Garfield High School.

For 20 years, Jaime Escalante taught calculus and advanced math at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles. This was a school where poor, hardened street kids were not supposed to master mathematics, and certainly not algebra, trigonometry, or calculus. His innovative mathematics program was credited for inspiring low-income, unteachable students to develop their math skills to the highest level. Why Escalante is Well Known Escalante's students ate, slept, and lived mathematics. Every day they would arrive an hour before school and stay two to three hours after school.

Escalante drilled them on Saturdays and made summer school mandatory. In 1982, all 18 of his advanced math students passed the calculus AP test. A few months later the test maker accused the students of cheating, and Escalante accused the test maker of being racist.

The students ended up retaking the test and passing once again with high scores. By 1991, 600 Garfield students were taking advanced placement exams, not just in math, but in other subjects, which was unheard of at the time.

In 1988 the movie Stand and Deliver premiered telling the story of Jamie Escalante’s journey. Escalante would later say that Stand and Deliver was 90 percent truth, and 10 percent drama.

His biggest complaint was that the movie left the impression that his students, most of whom were struggling with multiplication tables, mastered calculus overnight.
