As other reviewers have noted this EU CD set made in Germany comes with vastly improved sound quality to that on and on the individual Mercury CDs. While short on detail, this 2006 release has a very balanced song selection. Having recently watched the Paradise studio DVD and his tour DVD the order of JJ's songs can sometimes induce a state of somnolence but this set gets the balance just right - and the sound clarity may help with this.

I will repeat what others have written here. This and Anthology are the only remastered-for-CD versions of JJ Cale's records. Maybe someday there will be remasters of his entire catalog, but don't hold your breath. BUY THIS CD and enjoy sound clarity like you've never heard of this master songwriter and musician's best works. My only disappointment is that the tune 'Boilin Pot' (from the album '5') was not included.

There are however several alternate takes and three unreleased live versions. For me, those alone are worth the purchase price. I was privileged to hear Mr. Cale perform live three times over the years. The final time in Asheville NC he spoke with me following the performance and shook my hand. And Rocky Frisco gave me his set list.
On Holiday Inn stationery no less! JJ Cale was a recent discovery for me. I originally bought the CD 'The Very Best of JJ Cale,' but lost it during a move following Hurricane Katrina. Replacement of the album was high on my priority list, but while browsing Amazon, I stumbled onto the 'Ultimate Collection.
The three-CD set includes all of the cuts from 'The Very Best,' and from what I can tell, a large share of the best of his recorded music. I like his laid back style - soft vocals and articulate but subdued guitar solos. I'd recommend this collection to anyone with an interest in contemporary delta influenced blues/rock. If you're thinking of buying one J.J Cale CD,this is it. His best songs,selected from numerous albums,makes this a must have not just for his fans but for anyone who is not too familiar with his work.

The live version of Call Me The Breeze is a great piece of music-see if you can keep your feet from movin'. On some of his songs you can hear where Eric Clapton was inspired-think Lay Down Sally. Cale and Eric Clapton released A CD entitled The Road To Escondito. I would also recommend this highly.
